As an "experimenter" I have needed to build a cable but am too cheap to buy the crimper. How would you do the procedure without a crimper? Jim

I guess I'm a little unclear what you mean. If the wire order is the same, what difference does it make weather you flip the connector ends over, as long as you flip them on both ends? (held side by side wire order should be the same right to left regardless of weather the latch is on top or bottom, no?)

Pooch, I would like to note that your statement about the wire consistency is incorrect. Yes, you should make sure your wires are in the same order on both ends, but it is also important to know the correct order. I've been cutting RJ45 cable for about 13 years. When first starting out, I was told to use the order: WhiteOrange, Orange, WhiteBlue, Blue, WhiteGreen, Green, WhiteBrown, Brown. While technically incorrect, it worked just fine while our network was 10MB. However when we transitioned to 100MB we found that cables made in that order worked inconsistently. Our cable tester showed that crosstalk was occurring. Crosstalk is an electrical anomaly where a signal from one wire is partially transferred to another, usually adjacent, wire, causing miscommunication. The order shown in the video is the correct, by the standards, order. It will prevent crosstalk.

I always work with the connector side down (the plastic latch side) so you can see the wires clearly. As long as you do the same thing to both sides it'll work fine. Just make sure you're consistent.
